When you receive unemployment benefits, your monthly benefit payments may be paid via a debit card. This debit card will be be provided to you by your state unemployment office. It will be mailed to you once your claim for Unemployment Insurance is approved.

Each state has its own Unemployment Debit Card, which is usually issued by a bank under agreement with the State’s Unemployment Agency.

Here are the most frequently asked questions about Unemployment Debit Cards.

Receiving and activating your card

When will I receive my debit card?

If you are eligible for unemployment benefits, you should receive your debit card by mail within 7-10 business days after your claim is approved.

The card is issued directly from the Bank that is contracted with your state’s Unemployment Benefits agency.

See the debit card list above for the specific bank for your state.

Will the post office forward my debit card if I move and leave a forwarding address?

No. The card will be returned to the issuing bank.

If you have moved and changed have a new address, you must first contact your state’s unemployment agency to change your address on file.

You may also need to contact the bank responsible for issuing your state’s debit card to change your address with them so that they can mail a new card to your new address.

How long does my Unemployment debit card remain valid?

This varies by state, but generally, they remain valid for three years (36 months).

You should plan to keep your card until the expiration date of the card has passed – don’t throw it away!

That’s because if you apply for unemployment benefits in the future and you still have an unexpired card on record, your benefits will be paid on your existing card.

Using your Unemployment debit card

Where can I use the card to make purchases?

You can use the debit card to make purchases anywhere the card issuer debit cards are accepted.

For example, if you have a Visa debit card, your card will be accepted anywhere debit Visa cards are accepted.

In addition, you can also use your card for online, phone, and mail order purchases.

Transferring funds

Can I transfer funds from my debit card to a personal checking or savings account?

Yes. You can transfer some or all of your balance to a personal checking or savings account by logging into your debit card account online.

Follow the instructions specific to your state’s debit card issuing bank.

Once your transfer is made, it can take up to 2 business days for the funds to actually be credited to your checking or savings account, and the transfer cannot be canceled once entered.

Can I add money to my unemployment debit card?

No, your unemployment debit card can only be used to receive unemployment benefits.

You cannot add cash to the card transfer money from another bank account to your Unemployment debit card.

Replacing debit cards

What should I do if my card is lost, damaged, or stolen?

Contact customer service immediately.

Can I go into a branch of the issuing bank and get a temporary debit card?

No, you will not be able to get a temporary debit card from a bank branch.

You will have to call customer service to order a replacement card.

For an extra fee, you may be able to have your replacement card sent via expedited shipping.
